What are refractory materials and how do I colour them?

Refractory materials are typically ceramic materials and materials used above 600°C, according to DIN 51060 even above 1,500°C.

The main components of refractory materials are inorganic materials such as ceramics and refractory oxides such as SiO, Al2O3, MgO, CaO, ZrO and chromium oxide. Carbon and the so-called refractory metals molybdenum and tungsten are also typically included.

The main application is furnace linings in the steel, glass, aluminium and cement industries.

Due to the high temperatures of the firing process, only inorganic pigments are suitable for colouring refractory products. There are colour changes here, but they do not play a significant role for the function.
